Our History

Our Journey

Youth for a Sustainable World (YSW) traces its roots to the year 2000, when it was established as Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW) Kenya—the Kenya country office of the German Foundation for World Population, an international development organization founded in 1991 to empower young people and communities in low- and middle-income countries.

Founded after Ethiopia and alongside country offices in Uganda and Tanzania, DSW Kenya was created to deliver transformative programs closer to the communities that needed them most. From the outset, our mission was clear: to unlock the potential of young people through initiatives in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender equality, advocacy, youth economic empowerment, and capacity development.

Expansion & Growth

Initially operating from a single office in Nairobi, the organisation rapidly expanded to include three regional offices in Mombasa, Kakamega, and Embu to support community-level HIV prevention interventions.

Over the years, we built strong youth-led structures nationwide, positioning young people as key stakeholders in policy dialogue and advocacy for SRHR. To strengthen this approach, we developed two flagship models:

During this time, we expanded our reach further with a regional office in Kitale and satellite offices in Nakuru, Migori, and Kisumu, deepening our community engagement and national footprint.

Advocacy & Impact

Our growth enabled the launch of high-impact advocacy and accountability initiatives, including annual reviews of national and sub-national budgets to promote family planning resourcing and the establishment of dedicated family planning budget lines. We empowered young people to assess the quality and inclusivity of health services, engaging directly with policymakers and providers to enhance transparency and responsiveness.

Our peer learning model continues to create safe and inclusive spaces where peers share knowledge, experiences, and solutions to the challenges they face in their communities. Internally, we instituted robust safeguarding policies and a code of conduct to ensure the safety, inclusion, and ethical engagement of all youth and stakeholders. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we accelerated digital transformation—adopting hybrid and digital tools to strengthen collaboration, access, and program delivery.

Today & Tomorrow

Today, YSW operates in over 19 counties through a network of more than 80 youth clubs and 14 youth empowerment centres, equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and agency to shape their futures. In 2024, following a deliberate localisation process with DSW, the organization became an independent, nationally registered Public Benefit Organization under the new name Youth for a Sustainable World (YSW). Building on this legacy, YSW continues to drive transformative change through strategic partnerships, innovative programming, and youth-centred approaches, working toward a sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future for all young people.

Our Target

YSW works with adolescents and young people aged 10-24 as our core target population.

Mission

To empower young people, create a supportive environment, advance gender equality, and foster access to SRHR services.

Vision

A world where all young people - especially girls and young women - are healthy and empowered to drive sustainable change.
