Youth For A Sustainable World Empowers Students In Higher Learning Institutions

Youth for a Sustainable World ramped up its activities in higher institutions in Nakuru county, empowering over 2,370 students with SRHR information and services.

During separate events at Egerton University and Rift Valley National Polytechnic, the organisation engaged the youth with critical SRH information and services. This initiative aimed to increase awareness of SRH and provide essential services.

At Egerton University, the team leveraged two events: the National Drama, Radio/Film, Beauty Pageant, and Visual Arts Festival, which brought together 38 universities, and the University’s cultural week to offer services including modern contraceptives, HIV testing and counselling, cancer screenings, Pap smears and peer-to-peer counselling.

In both institutions, students gained extensive knowledge on contraception use, enabling them to demystify myths and misconceptions about contraception. The personalised interactions were vital in reassuring students and helping them make informed choices about their reproductive health.

A key lesson from the engagement with students is the need to leverage student bodies to enhance awareness and participation, increasing outreach success. This, coupled with interactive and enjoyable sessions, attracts more students and creates a positive learning environment for SRH.
