From trainee to trailblazer- Phillips’ story

When opportunity met preparedness, Phillips Odhiambo, a dedicated member of Nyalenda Young Turks Youth Empowerment Centre, stepped forward without hesitation. Through the YSW leadership and management training, Phillip had gained the skills, confidence, and vision to lead—and he was ready.

He was the chairperson of the International Youth Day planning committee in Kisumu, taking on the enormous responsibility of coordinating activities, mobilising teams, and ensuring the event’s success.

Phillips was also a fearless advocate.

In meetings with high-level leaders, including the County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Sports and Youth Affairs, the Regional Director of the State Department of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, and the County Commissioner, Phillips boldly presented young people’s grievances and aspirations.

His clear planning, strategic approach, and unshakable courage turned what seemed impossible into a remarkable success. He is a testament that with the right kind of support and training, young people can lead sustainable change at the local level.
