Janice’s Mission to Represent Kwale’s Young People

My journey in community work began with a small group of passionate and goal-driven youth who came together to form a community-based organisation from scratch. At the time, I was volunteering at the Office of Youth Affairs at sub county offices, and was invited for a training by Youth for a Sustained World (YSW), as a peer educator. This training marked the beginning of a journey I never imagined would shape me into who I am today.

As a peer educator, I engaged in advocacy targeting young girls, raising awareness on issues around SRHR, gender equality, and SGBV. Through these engagements I became a gender advocate. The more I engaged with the community, the more I developed my confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper sense of purpose. I found myself not just educating others, but also growing within.

Meanwhile, our organization Lunga Lunga Youth CBO was also evolving. We received our first funding through the Uwezo Fund, which enabled us to start a water kiosk project. Later, YSW supported us further by funding us through two projects. We set up an office structure, and for the first time, we were able to employ our own group members. It was a big step forward.

I later left for college, but my passion for community work didn’t end there. I was still a peer educator when I returned. I rejoined the organization as a volunteer project officer for seven months, learning and giving my best with every opportunity. Eventually, I was promoted to Project Officer where I implemented an economic empowerment project namely Meaningful Opportunities for Youth, and later I was promoted , to Programs Manager—a position I proudly hold.

Working with the CBO, I gained experience and confidence thus applying for a seat at the Kwale Youth Assembly as the Cabinet Secretary for Labour. While I didn’t secure the seat, I was honored to be appointed as the Deputy Spokesperson to the President of the Assembly—a milestone I deeply value. This reflects on all the work I have put and the support from the CBO and YSW.

Looking back, this journey has been filled with challenges, but it has also been full of growth, transformation, and impact. From starting a CBO with nothing, to being empowered and trained by YSW, I’ve grown into a leader and advocate for my community. I am grateful for every opportunity, every young person I’ve spoken to, and every life touched through our collective efforts. This is just the beginning of my journey, I am committed to going even further.
