Ysw Showcases Apprenticeship Programme

Youth for a Sustainable World, in collaboration with the State Department of Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy and Tiko (formerly Triggerise), hosted the State Department’s Principal Secretary (PS) Ismail Maalim in Kisumu and Mombasa to assess the progress of program implementation, especially learners linked to apprenticeship (Master craftsmen) programmes. This visit was part of high-level government officials monitoring of implementation activities across the country through the months of May and June.

The PS met key officials from the two counties, including the governor for Kisumu County, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o who acknowledged the importance of the project in provision of accurate and timely SRH information to young people, and improvement of livelihoods through apprenticeship programs in the informal settlements of Kisumu and Mombasa. The government, through the State department, committed to accelerating the processing of pending bills to all parties to fast-track project implementation. VIVA was, in 2022, listed as one of the pillar youth empowerment programs by the Government of Kenya and its performance is of high interest to the National treasury of Kenya.

The PS’s visit also included courtesy visits to Youth for a Sustainable World’s youth empowerment centers in Mombasa and Kisumu. In Mombasa, the PS was hosted by SEYA, who showcased their work supported by Youth for a Sustainable World and the institutional and individual benefits they have accrued from training and the government’s funds that include Youth Enterprise funds. In Kisumu, the PS visited Kuoyo Health center, one of the VIVA attached Facility, where he took part in a peer learning session on drug and substance abuse that was facilitated by peer educators from Amazon Theatrix Group.  In his interaction with peer learners, he urged them to take full advantage of their commitment to the peer learning session by putting into practice what they have learned and spread the same message to their fellow youth to spur prosperous community that is free from drug and substance abuse.
