25 young women, one transformative leadership journey

At Youth for a Sustainable World, we believe that leadership begins with self-awareness and grows through experience. Guided by this vision, we recently took 25 young women through a seven-week leadership program designed to nurture inner strength, emotional intelligence, and purpose-driven leadership.

The weekly learning experience, led by Coach Clemencia Mwamburi, evolved into a powerful journey of reflection, growth, and sisterhood. The initiative created a safe space for young women to explore who they are, what they stand for, and how they can influence positive change in their communities.

“The program helped participants awaken to their inner compass, transitioning from unconscious influence to intentional impact. What emerged was not only individual transformation but the birth of a community of reflective, value-centered young women committed to leading change,” says the coach.

Each session focused on a unique theme: meditation, self-awareness, visual mapping, making choices as a leader, and dealing with failure. Together, these topics helped participants understand that leadership is not only about guiding others — it’s also about understanding oneself deeply.

Through self-awareness exercises, the young women reflected on their values, strengths, and personal motivations — building the foundation for authentic leadership.

“From what I have learned, leadership is not about titles or positions — it’s about influence, inspiration, and integrity. True leaders are those who light the path for others, dare to make courageous choices, and lift others as they rise. Leadership is a journey of discovery — every challenge tests us, every success strengthens our courage, and every mistake teaches us grace,” said Arusha Mwanajuma from Msambweni.

The visual mapping sessions encouraged participants to envision their goals and trace the steps needed to bring those visions to life.

“Always be consistent, and have a vision. Consistency is the daily practice of your vision. Without a clear picture of where you are going, your efforts will lack direction. Let your vision be your constant compass,” said Vanessa Chesiro from Nakuru.

“That exercise helped me translate my dreams into something I can actually see , and now, every time I look at it, I’m reminded of where I’m going and the kind of leader I aspire to be. I also went through a deeply emotional exercise, writing a letter to my younger self and my future self. It reminded me of how far I’ve come, the battles I’ve overcome, and the woman I’m still becoming. It taught me that healing and growth are both parts of leadership,” Emmaculate Pahe from Kilifi, said.

When exploring decision-making, participants learned that leadership often requires courage — the courage to make difficult choices, stay grounded in values, and take responsibility for outcomes. The conversation on dealing with failure became one of the most impactful, transforming the idea of mistakes into opportunities for growth and resilience.

Beyond skills and knowledge, the program built a strong network of young women leaders — a community rooted in mutual learning, encouragement, and shared purpose. By the end of the seven weeks, the transformation was visible — in their confidence, clarity, and collective vision for a better future.

“It showed me that leadership is a continuous learning process and that together, we can achieve more when we support, uplift, and collaborate with one another. This mentorship has truly helped me grow in knowledge, confidence, and courage to lead with purpose,”  Saa Salim said.

The coach noted, “the most inspiring moments came when participants who once hesitated to speak began leading sessions, sharing their stories with conviction, and offering to mentor others. Their courage and growth reflect the true spirit of Magis — striving for the greater good through self-leadership and service.”

Through this initiative, YSW continues to champion young women’s leadership as a pathway to inclusive and sustainable development. The 25 participants are now part of a growing movement of changemakers — ready to influence, inspire, and impact their communities in bold new ways.
