How Joy Wanja Found Her Voice in Leadership
In a world increasingly shaped by the perspectives and actions of young people, the importance of strong and visionary leadership cannot be overstated. For Joy Wanja, this journey began in 2024, when she was elected as one of the Njoro Youth Empowerment Centre leaders. Although she carried immense passion and determination, Joy initially struggled with confidence and lacked the practical skills needed to make a meaningful impact.
Her desire to grow into a more effective leader led her to enrol in Lifeyangu’s leadership module program, complemented by a series of mentorship sessions supported by YSW. These opportunities provided personalised and tailored guidance, addressing her specific needs, and equipping her with tools to navigate the challenges of leadership.
Through these sessions, she confronted leadership obstacles and gained insights that helped her build the confidence to articulate, not only her personal views but also the collective aspirations of those she represented. The mentorship proved pivotal, enabling her to refine her communication skills, strengthen her public speaking abilities, and develop a commanding presence. With these newfound skills, Joy began applying her learning within her community actively participating in discussions and initiatives that tackled pressing youth issues. Her engagement quickly earned her respect among peers, establishing her as a credible and trusted leader.
Joy’s journey did not stop there. She played a role in sphere heading the formation and registration of Bright Wellness Youth Community-Based Organisation, which aims to empower young people with knowledge on sexual and reproductive health rights, gender equality, and socio-economic empowerment, enabling them to make informed choices and drive sustainable change. Recognizing her dedication and communication prowess, Joy was appointed as the communications person in the CBO, a role she proudly owns.
“Through the series of mentorship, I have grown into this position, gaining the skills, perspective, and vision needed to communicate effectively with and for young people. The mentorship experiences have sharpened my creativity, strengthened my leadership, and deepened my sense of purpose. Today, I stand not only as a communicator, but also as a mentor and advocate empowered to amplify youth voices, influence meaningful dialogue, and inspire lasting positive change.”
