Why Responsive Care is important for Contraception Uptake
While the intrauterine device (IUD) is among the most effective and widely used contraception methods, it carries a very small risk of failure. This was the experience of Yvonne*, a young mother who visited the Njoro Youth Empowerment Centre facility for a routine postnatal baby check-up.
During her visit, Yvonne openly shared her concerns about an unintended pregnancy, which she had not anticipated while using the IUCD. She reflected that she had missed her scheduled follow-up appointments and was now uncertain and anxious about whether to continue with the same method or switch to another option.
‘’What made the difference for me was being listened to without judgment and being given the information, I needed to make the best decision for myself.” says Yvonne during the feedback session.
Her openness created space for a calm, respectful, and client-centred counselling session. The provider listened attentively and engaged her in a guided discussion on how IUCDs function, why follow-up visits are essential, and how missed reviews can affect ongoing monitoring and support. Together, they explored her concerns and clarified any misconceptions, allowing her to better understand her experience without blame or judgment.
With this renewed clarity and reassurance, Yvonne felt confident in her decision to continue with the IUCD and had a new one inserted. She also expressed commitment to attending her follow-up appointments consistently, recognizing their importance in supporting her reproductive health journey.
“Our role as providers is not to judge, but to guide clients with empathy, accurate information, and respectful support.” Melisa Anaseli, Nurse, Njoro Youth Empowerment Centre.
