Youth saving clubs established to boost economic empowerment
YSW supported young people to establish Youth Saving and Loaning Associations (YSLA). This was the culmination of a successful mapping that also involved preliminary engagement with the groups to establish their interest and capacity run a YSLA.
Consequently, 25 mapped YSLA groups were launched at an event that brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the State Department of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy (SDYACE), Kisumu’s Gender Sector Working Group under economic empowerment pillar, representation, young people and YSW staff. The YSLA leaders received crucial insights into opportunities available for youth groups, particularly regarding application timelines and procedures for various government funds such as Uwezo Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, and Youth Fund.
The YLSA leaders also gained hands-on experience through a simulation of an effective YSLA meeting, allowing them to practice how to conduct share meetings effectively and utilise accountability tools for better management practices.
The Nyanza regional coordinator of the SDYACE, Richard Nyagaka called for the youth to be committed to the YSLAs.
“I call upon every one of you to commit to ensure continuous existence of the groups to reap the great benefit it offers. As guided by the youth officer, always be on the lookout for available opportunity for your action. Our offices are always open for any support you may need,” he said.
Following the launch, the 25 VSLAs will undergo training to enhance their capacity in VSLA management including review of their constitution to ensure they adhere to the provisions therein. YSW has already supported three youth clubs under United Destiny Shapers Youth Empowerment Centre to review their constitution to reflect their current operations.
